Master Your Cash Flow: How to Calculate Your Startup’s Runway
When building a business or launching a startup, cash is your ultimate lifeline. If you’ve ever heard entrepreneurs talk about having “six months of runway left,” they aren’t talking about a fashion show. In the business world, runway is the amount of time your company can operate before it completely runs out of money.
Knowing how to calculate and monitor your runway is essential for staying afloat, making smart hiring decisions, and avoiding sudden financial crises.
What is Runway, Anyway?
Simply put, your runway is measured in months. It tells you: “At our current rate of spending, exactly how many months do we have left before our bank account hits zero?”
If your runway is 12 months, that means you have one year to either become profitable, break even, or raise more funding before you are forced to shut your doors.
The Golden Formula
Calculating your runway is surprisingly straightforward. You only need two core pieces of information:
- Total Cash: The actual money you have in the bank right now.
- Net Burn Rate: How much more money you are spending than you are making each month.
$$text{Runway (Months)} = frac{text{Total Cash Balance}}{text{Monthly Net Burn Rate}}$$
Step-by-Step Breakdown
Step 1: Find Your Total Cash
Look at all your active business bank accounts, checking accounts, and liquid short-term investments. This is your raw capital pool—money you can access immediately to pay bills, salaries, and software subscriptions.
Step 2: Calculate Your Monthly Net Burn Rate
Your burn rate is the speed at which your cash disappears. It is critical to look at Net Burn, not Gross Burn:
- Gross Burn: The total amount of money your business spends every month.
- Monthly Revenue: The total money coming in from customers each month.
- Net Burn: Your Gross Burn minus your Monthly Revenue.
Example: If your business spends $10,000 a month on expenses (rent, tools, salaries) and brings in $4,000 a month in sales, your Net Burn Rate is $6,000 per month.
Step 3: Do the Math
Divide your total cash by your net burn rate.
- If you have $60,000 in the bank and your net burn rate is $6,000/month:
- $$frac{$60,000}{$6,000} = 10 text{ months of runway}$$
Why Runway Matters (And How to Extend It)
Your runway acts as an early-warning system. Smart founders keep a close eye on it because fundraising or pivoting takes much longer than expected—often 3 to 6 months.
