Living in a Narrow World: Understanding Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI) and Everyday Examples
When people talk about Artificial Intelligence (AI) in movies and sci-fi books, they usually imagine conscious robots that can think, feel, and chat just like humans—or perhaps take over the world. But if you look at the technology we actually use every single day, you are living squarely in the era of Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI).
Also known as Weak AI, ANI refers to computer systems designed and trained to complete a specific, tightly defined task. Unlike humans, an ANI system cannot think outside its pre-programmed boundaries, apply its skills to completely unrelated fields, or possess self-awareness. However, within its specific domain, it can often outperform human beings entirely.
