Beyond the Neural Network: The Surprisingly Rich World of Text-to-Speech Without AI
When we think of text-to-speech (TTS) today, our minds instantly jump to hyper-realistic, deep-learning-driven artificial intelligence. Modern AI models can clone voices from a 3-second audio clip, inject emotional nuance, and breathe lifelike pauses into synthetic speech.
Yet, long before transformers, neural vocoders, and cloud-scale machine learning dominated the audio landscape, computers were talking. And astonishingly, non-AI, algorithmic, and mechanical text-to-speech methods didn’t die out—they evolved.
